Scariest Book / Movie Ever?

After yesterday's post about being scared by footsteps from a movie, I thought it'd be interesting to hear from YOU.  What was the scariest book or movie you've read/seen?

I don't know the name of the book - it was an anthology of ghost stories I read back in 1985 or something.  I was sitting in a rocking chair with my back to the door and the character in the book was sitting in a rocking chair with her back to the door when something awful happened.  Freaky.

Movies?  I don't do slasher/gore.  Blair Witch Project freaked me out.  As did Paranormal Activity.   But I think the worst was Signs.  I saw it at night on the other side of town so I had to drive home (past a cornfield no less).  ACK

So...tell me the scariest book/movie ever and why did it hit home?

i TOTALLY second the exorcist. i'll admit it... i snuck into my mom's bed that night, and then slept the next two weeks with the lights on... i was thirteen.

For books probably At The Mountains of Madness which is a novella by HP Lovecraft. For movies probably The Exorcist. That move was terrifying.

I don't like movies that are based in real life. Real life scares me more than anything. One of the movies that left me disturbed for a long time was Angelina Jolie's Changeling. Because it's based on real life monsters.

That little bitchy girl that climbs out of the well in The RIng. Ugh. That had me freaked out to drive home alone from the movie theatre!

The original Nightmare on Elm Street. I remember being about 7 or 8, it was Halloween and a clip was on TV. I caught the bit where he gets pulled into the bed. That freaked me out I wouldn't put my feet into the middle of the bed for a week. lol.

LOL! Signs is about the only scary movie I like. I hated The Ring--I had nightmares for days. Any book or movie with skinwalkers or gore will be sure to give me creeps too--I avoid them. :0) Especially skinwalkers--I live too close to Navajo reservations.

Have a great day, Vicki!

The Ring was very creepy. So was Event Horizon, a science-fiction horror film.
Otherwise, I'm rather jaded. Seen too many!

Psycho was the scaries for me because the theme song was the loudest when nothing happened. Then when the main girl got knifed to death in the shower . . . silence.

The sixth sense seriously freaked me out...for a long time. And then there was 'the grudge'. *shudders*

you know, I never saw paranormal activity. BWP did scare me... But the scary movie that will forever be in my head is that circa 1980s movie Manhunter. It was the first of those Hannibal Lector books made into a movie. OK, well JRM decides we should watch it the night before he leaves to be out of town for four days... Our house has a wall of windows facing an empty lot filled w/trees.

After the killer slaughters the sleeping family--using night vision goggles--we learn that he'd been watching them through the windows from the trees for days...

Yep. That'll do it. :D

Great question! I love scary movies and books. The movie I most remember giving me a hard time sleeping was Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon. I'm not sure why, I've definitely watched scarier stuff, but just the thought of a ghost being in the house really freaked me out. I guess I haven't read a scary book in a while, but I probably should. I remember the Shining was quite scary. Maybe I'll dig up Salem's Lot.

I am the WORST with scary stuff. Last terrifying book I read was Amytiville Horror. I read it alone while babysitting. Duh! Last scary movie was The Sixth Sense. I couldn't sleep for weeks after that darn movie.

I have an active dream life. I cannot watch or read scary stories. It seriously messes with me. How did I discover this?

1. The Exorcist
2. Blaire Witch Project

Never again.

The Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Did not see the Exorcist...I read it...and then I saw the author on Johnny Carson....he had a recording of a real exorcism.....I slept with the lights on in my room for the next week.
